Letter to a Christian Bernie Sanders Supporter

The following letter was addressed to a Christian supporter of Bernie Sanders.  Specific concerns were expressed about Donald Trump's motivation in running for president, and also about his character.  This letter attempts to address these concerns.

You say that both Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton are running for president out of greed.  On this point, I would like to respectfully suggest that you are mistaken, which hopefully you will see if you take some time to examine the evidence.  You are certainly correct with respect to Hillary Clinton.  Her motivations for greed have been apparent since her earliest days in Arkansas, when she made a fortune overnight in a corrupt, politically-motivated trading deal.  The Clintons cashed in on billions of dollars cheating the Haitians out of funds that were donated for earthquake relief, and they collected hundreds of millions of dollars in bribes for selling out the State Department.  The list of evidence goes on and on.

But contrast this with Donald Trump.  Donald Trump has contributed a hundred million dollars out of his own pocket to pay for the presidential campaign.  Although Hillary has the wealth, she hasn't contributed a dime of her own toward her campaign.  She relies instead on huge donations from large corporations and special interest groups, and even foreign donors, which isn't even legal.  Donald Trump has taken nothing from large donors or special interests, so that he won't be beholden or answerable to anyone but the American people.  Donald Trump's supporters are ordinary American citizens who haved contributed an average of about $65 apiece.

During the flood in Louisiana, Donald Trump sent over a huge semi truck full of supplies, and went there himself to help out.  Hillary was nowhere to be found.  Likewise, Trump donated $30,000 in supplies and food to help out the people in North Carolina who were affected by the hurricane.  Donald Trump's actions are not those of a man motivated by greed.  The thing you need to understand about Trump is that he really, really loves his country.  America has been good to him, and he wants to give back.

Hillary Clinton has always had the ambition of getting to the White House.  People who have known her from her youth testify that she has always been greedy for power as well as money.  This is just not the case for Donald Trump.  There are many interviews of him as a younger man saying that he wasn't interested in running for president, and that he wouldn't do so unless it “got really bad”.  Well, guess what? It's gotten really bad!  Donald Trump didn't have to leave his comfortable life to suffer all the attacks, abuse and false accusations that have been slung at him, but he considered it worth the cost to serve his country and the American people.

Now, a lot of people had their hopes on Bernie Sanders.  The unfortunate thing is, whatever his intentions were at the beginning, when the DNC cheated him out of the nomination and offered him a lot of money to keep his mouth shut and endorse Hillary, he sold out.  He demonstrated in view of the whole nation that he was willing to take a bribe.  He could have chosen to stand by his principles, refuse the bribe, and call out the DNC for their corruption, but he didn't.  And because he didn't, at that point all his anti-corruption arguments were entirely defeated.  He became part of the machine.

Yet I think that what many Bernie supporters are discovering is that Donald Trump really does stand for all the good that was in Bernie, and more.  He truly isn't in this for himself, but for the good of the American people.  If you listen to any of his rallies you will see that he has placed a great deal of importance on bettering the lives the poor.  He is committed to dismantling the corrupt systems that are keeping poverty in place, and working hard to bring in good, well-paying jobs for everyone.  Furthermore, Donald Trump is going to drastically cut income taxes for all Americans.  The Clinton campaign wants people to believe that Donald Trump's policies only benefit the wealthy, but this simply isn't true.  Trump's tax cuts are going to benefit everyone, including and especially the poor, as well as the middle class.  Reducing taxes will also help better the economy as a whole.  This isn't just a theory, but has been proven to be successful during the Kennedy and Reagan administrations, for example.

I think everyone is disgusted with how the Clintons continually break the law with impunity, and the FBI and Justice Department do nothing.  Donald Trump is committed to getting rid of the corruption in Washington and restoring law and order to our nation.  He is committed to stopping the flow of illegal drugs that are ruining the lives of young people.  He is committed to helping our veterans and ensuring that they get all the care they need.

Does Donald Trump represent what Jesus stands for?  Once again, take a look at the evidence.  Donald Trump has put his boots on the ground, going from community to community to talk to people personally and find out what they struggle with and what their needs are, because he genuinely cares about them and wants to help.  You certainly don't see this from anyone in the Clinton campaign.  He is finding out where the problems are so that he can fix them.  He's a guy who likes fixing things.  You've already seen how he responds with compassion and real, tangible assistance when people are in need, as I mentioned above.  You can also look at his past projects to see how he has taken ugly, poor, run-down neighborhoods and transformed them into beautiful, prosperpous and vital communities, that benefit everyone who lives there.  He can do that for our country.

Is he perfect?  Of course not.  None of us are.  We are all works-in-progress.  But it's important first to sort out the truth from the lies.  Understand that the mainstream media is in complete collusion with the Clinton campaign, and that they will do and say anything they can to smear and defeat their opponent, including propagating outright lies and attempting to frame him with false accusations.  This isn't just opinion; Wikileaks and other sources have produced more than enough evidence to verify these things.  There has been a lot of mud slinging and name calling, but if you want to know the truth, you need to search out reliable sources and look for real evidence.

Even so, Donald Trump has said and done some things he is not proud of.  Haven't we all?  The thing to remember here is that God doesn't wait for a person to be perfect in order for Him to use that person to do good, and to carry out God's plans.  For example, Sampson was a moral disaster, but God still chose him and used him to bring about deliverance for the Jewish people.  And there are many other examples in Scripture of God using imperfect people to accomplish His will.  This is actually good news for you and me.  If God required us to be perfect saints in order for Him to raise us up to do good, nothing would ever get done!

Cyrus was a Persian who didn't know God.  He came to Babylon and overthrew the corrupt government, and his rulership actually benefitted the people who lived there.  After coming to Babylon, where the Jews were living in exile, Cyrus came to know the Lord, and he caused the temple in Jerusalem to be rebuilt.  A hundred and fifty years before Cyrus was born, God prophesied about him through Isaiah, calling him out by name:

“When I say of Cyrus, ‘He is my shepherd,’
he will certainly do as I say.
He will command, ‘Rebuild Jerusalem’;
he will say, ‘Restore the Temple.’”

This is what the Lord says:

“I will go before you, Cyrus,
and level the mountains.
I will smash down gates of bronze
and cut through bars of iron.
And I will give you treasures hidden in the darkness —
secret riches.
I will do this so you may know that I am the Lord,
the God of Israel, the one who calls you by name.

And why have I called you for this work?
Why did I call you by name when you did not know me?
It is for the sake of Jacob my servant,
Israel my chosen one.
I am the Lord;
there is no other God.
I have equipped you for battle,
though you don’t even know me,
so all the world from east to west
will know there is no other God.
I am the Lord, and there is no other.”

Isaiah 44:28, 45:2-6

God is raising up Donald Trump to be a type of Cyrus for our nation.  Though Donald Trump does believe in God and considers himself a Christian, he still has much to learn about walking with God, and there is a lot of purification that still needs to take place.  And God will purify him.  But God has prepared and equippped Donald Trump for this task, and will raise him up so that the American people will benefit, and that we will be blessed.  It is for our sake and our benefit that God is doing this.  And not only ours, but for the good of Israel and for the world.

When Samuel went to anoint David as King of Israel, God didn't tell him right away which of Jesse's sons He had chosen.  Samuel saw the eldest, and thought he was the guy, but God told Samuel, “I have rejected him.  The Lord doesn’t see things the way you see them.  People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”  (1 Samuel 16:7)  I believe that God has looked at the heart of Donald Trump and found in him the integrity needed to do the job.

Do we want to be like Jesus?  Jesus calls us to walk in love and to forgive one another.  The body of Christ consists of imperfect people seeking to do God's work with integrity of heart.  1 John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins to Him, [God] is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.”  Donald Trump has prayed and asked forgiveness for his sins, as Ben Carson can testify.  None of us is perfect, but we have the assurance that as we turn away from our sins and submit to God, He will cleanse us and change us for the good.  Donald Trump is a work-in-progress, and he is learning how to walk with God as he works to accomplish God's purposes in delivering the American people from corruption and oppression.

Dinesh D'Souza recently gave a speech at Liberty University in which he specifically addresses Christians who have misgivings about Donald Trump.  He shows how morality consists not only of intentions but of consequences.  He points out that the decision to stay home in November, and to refuse to vote on “moral grounds”, ultimately has the consequence of casting a vote for Hillary Clinton.  And a vote for Clinton is a vote to continue and deepen the corruption in Washington.  A vote for Clinton is a vote to swing the balance of the Supreme Court against us and against the United States Constitution.  A vote for Clinton is a vote to put “religious freedom, already precarious, into a much more endangered position, because the checks and balances that normally block the government are themselves being eroded.”  To vote for Clinton is to vote for a regime in which justice is exercised only at the arbitrary discretion of those who are in power and who desire only to enrich themselves and preserve their power.  D'Souza encourages Christians to think critically, weigh the options, and consider what you can do to preserve, protect and defend the American dream.
